My role as a technical apprentice involves assisting more senior members of my team with tasks, some may be admin related tasks others may be more technical, which allow me to learn on the job.
I've learnt a wide range of new skills whilst employed at BAE Detica; most of which I would say are 'soft skills' that can be transferred between jobs.
The programme is decent; although I believe there are ways it could be improved, particularly the college aspect.
I feel very valued here and I feel that the fellow employees here are really the best part about working at this company.
I would say the programme is very well structured, there are many events that the apprentices engage in outside college/work which keeps things fresh and interesting.
My training provider visits my place of work once a week for a session of college work which really does add up and help.
My employer helps me a lot with work and sometimes even college related tasks; I have frequent 1 to 1s with seniors who discuss my progression within the company and ask me where I see myself in the future and how to progress to reach that goal, which is very very beneficial to apprentices.
For a person living alone and having to pay travel + living costs, the salary isn't the most ideal, especially if living near to the place of work (Leeds). Would be good if wage matched minimum for 21 y/o's (£6.50/hr) in first year of apprenticeship.
Yes there are many opportunities outside of work, not just work related but socially as well to be able to network and meet people.
Yes
The company is a very respectable company with many high profile clients and a good structure for its employees. Not just that, but the people are very friendly and supportive, especially senior members of staff and they all want everyone (especially apprentices) to achieve and be successful.
I would say to focus on really thinking about why it is you want to work in IT and where you see yourself in the future, and if you can show you are committed, it will really help.
