Hi, I’m George and I'm a second-year engineering maintenance apprentice at Gatwick airport. This apprenticeship has already taught me so much and put me into an adaptive environment which allows me to learn on the job while also getting the theory under my belt from going to college regularly.

No two days are the same as being a 24/7 airport things are constantly changing and need continuous support to keep the 46 million passengers a year happy with their experience and allow them to go on their holidays stress free.

As an engineering apprentice at Gatwick I've gotten to see first-hand the amazing work the engineers do to ensure the airport runs smoothly and while being supervised by them, do my bit.

Before this apprenticeship I did my A levels but I decided not to go to Uni and instead get this apprenticeship for a few reasons. One of these were because I would be getting paid to learn on the job at the world’s busiest single runway airport while still getting qualifications and learning practically.

At the moment I'm on Airfield engineering where I have been on the front line maintaining and fixing many things such as the runway lights, loading bridges and fixed ground power and learning how they all work which has been so interesting to me.

Every day I get up excited to see what new challenges I will face at work and leave feeling accomplished as I know I've made a difference. I feel like a valued member of the team at Gatwick which is often referred to as the Gatwick Family because no matter where you work or who you work for people are always happy to go out of their way to help.

I look forward to my next few years of my apprenticeship as I will be going around all the engineering sections getting new skills and perspectives further increasing my passion for engineering.
