  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an apprentice civil engineer is working with the utilities team, working and managing our subcontractors carrying out gas diversions on main roads, have to be able to understand scope of works to plan ahead and cause no delays and go by the program set dates

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills, as first time in the industry, I have got a lot of experience being here for just a year and a half. Used new equipments and instruments, witnessed and collaborated with the process of building up to a new project.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program a lot! As I can learn new things everyday and gain as much experience as possible. There is a lot of help around so it makes it more enjoyable to know we can ask for help along the way.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well organised, as we always have a set time and time to talk and speak about our progress, which is the main part of our journey. Program allows everyone involved to be able to understand what we have done and what we would like to achieve

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support, they help me with anything and everything, but also challenge me as I myself wanted to push myself to do more. Having regular meetings allow me to express my thoughts and which then my employer can understand and support me with it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from my training provider, as they have a lot of information online for our modules, they allow us to understand it well as it is well written and set out, they go out their way to provide extra sessions for support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel it help me a lot as it can go hand in hand, as my qualification is similar to my job role, it plays a good part to help me perform better in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes we have extra curricular activities such as football, eating out, bowling, pinppong etc, we also have a lot of event where we can network and meet new people, and learn new things, which is really great

  • 9a. Would you recommend Costain to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Costain provides a lot of help in anyone’s journey, they make sure we are all good with whatever we are doing, there is a lot of benefits to use and help us in our day to day lives, which is why I will recommend


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • I will let them know to always push yourself when starting out, as you want to get out there and show your colleagues why you have joined the team and make yourself known to have played an important part in any project.
