  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently I am with the IPComms team within BT, although this will change as the apprenticeship progresses. I currently deal with issues that customers have had with their systems that have gone through our first line team and need a bit more help.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes we have leant a lot of new skills and sharpened our existing skills. Learning the job while actually doing it is far superior to learning in a class room. Apprentices also seem to get higher grades while only being in education 3 weeks a year.

  • Every day is a lot of fun you will learn a few new things every day and work with great people.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised. We have key skills we need to hit as part of our program BT have produced a list of which departments will cover which skill so at the end of the 4 years you will have covered them all.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A great amount we get one full day a week to focus on our Uni work and multiple times during the rest of the week I am able to take myself off for an hour or two just to make sure I am on top of any extra work that has been set. This is encouraged.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A good amount we can always message our tutors and see them on a weekly basis.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gives us the theory that we can then try and use in practice at our job. This is my first year so I am not too far along yet but the Networking course gave me a better understanding on how traffic passes through the platform I work on at BT

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes a lot! Drinks, gaming tournaments, pool competitions and lots of industry lectures.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • My sister recommended them to me as she worked there and had nothing but good things to say about them. I have also found my time to be excellent there.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Keep applying they take on new apprentices every year and if you intend to get a degree doing it any other way leads you to debt! As someone who is a bit older and has done Uni before this is a far better way to go about it!
