  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in Secure Contracts Digital, splitting my week into 3. I do 3 days in office, a day at University doing lectures and the other as a study day to revise content. I rotate between teams in office every 6 months to build a wider skill set but from a broad description the day-to-day involves designing, developing and delivering secure applications and networks to customer contracts

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a brand new skill set of IT and network fundamentals as well as now being able to code for front end development (HTML, CSS, Bootstrap 5 etc) and now object orientated programming like C#. I also have developed personal communication and organisational skills since starting the business in 2023.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme so much. I am extremely supported by the people I work with who are always willing to help me progress. The split of office days and the university too really eases the move from a college environment to a professional/corporate role.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme with BT is well structured and things are as organised as they can be however the training provider my programme is with can sometimes be less structured which can affect this. That being said this is only one training provider from the many BT offer

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My Line manager and temporary rotation managers are extremely supportive with my overall progression and give both recognition and constructive feedback when necessary so that I continue to develop to the best of my ability. BT itself also offer lots of benefits to employees for mental an physical support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has provided different software such as Glean for me to use to meet my learning adjustments and has been supportive. There is also opportunity to book tutoring sessions and group meetings in the main campus for assignment right ups or general content revision with lecturers which is helping me work towards my qualifications

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am still in my first year so it is hard to apply content covered so far into my role since the first year isn't very technical as we get used to assignments and assessments, but as time passes the future modules will 100% help me perform better

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am based at Adastral and am aware other locations have more extra-curriculars available but there are still some organised events to get involved in such as networking days, sports day, all hands meet ups, or sustainability day etc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • From my experience, despite being a big company, it does care for it's employees and a great place for opportunities so you are not limiting yourself into just one single role, you can move around the business and gain such a wide skill set.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • This is mainly for apprentices/grads but could be for other employees. Firstly be patient as the applying process can be long but it is worth it!! Be your authentic self, BT supports individuality and new ideas are always encouraged. Be aware of the latest principles / values for assessment centres and when your in them also support the other people who are also applying to show your ability to work in a team
