  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I project manage the mechanical, electrical and public health engineering on construction projects. I check systems will work efficiently and meet standards. I suggest ideas for building systems on site and work with the client and contractors to make sure they have what they need to progress the project, and safely.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my programme. It's engaging and challenging. Everyday is different. Whether it's analysing drawings and spotting errors, checking method statements or quality of install, meeting clients to discuss handover requirements and progress updates. I am fully supported by my project team and wider team. My questions are always answered and I am empowered to speak up about any ideas I have and take on responsibilities, even with the little experience I have.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a dedicated team for my apprenticeship and education that are responsive and approachable. I work closely with my line manager, shadowing them day-to-day and catching up regularly. They are happy to support me in any way they can and everyone I have spoken to has offered support/guidance whenever I need it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has been mixed. My company have set up feedback sessions which the college are responsive too. Some teachers are clear on what we are covering and their expectations for work, others are less clear.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Currently, my B-tec qualification does not relate to my engineering role as it covers construction knowledge. However, I am confident that my engineering degree will be very useful in supporting my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many groups and activates to get involved in here. We have socials set up by various members of staff, for projects and also just apprentices. We have football tournaments and networking events with seniors members.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I couldn't ask for a more supportive company. They thrive to meet their standards and goals and are genuinely passionate about them. They have great processes which are clear to follow and are created by experts in their field. The set up for apprentices is brilliant. I feel confident I will finish my apprenticeship as a competent engineer and good manager.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Be yourself! Mace look for people with a good attitude. If you are hard-working, approachable and open-minded, they know you can learn what you need to do the role you have applied for, and well. Knowledge and experience is less important. They look for a good character. Sociable, honest, collaborative.
