  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Processing tissue from samples, to stained on microscope slides in order to analyze them for any abnormalities and their causes. This includes tissue trimming, embedding and sectioning the tissue samples and then looking at them under a microscope to judge them.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Data integrity, quality compliance, lab tech skills, following SOP's, creating risk assessments and analytical skills are just a few of the skills I have developed.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my job: I feel like it has given me so many transferrable skills, and I was very lucky to find such an opportunity so early on in my professional career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is very well structured, with only 2 units running at one time, it makes it feel a little bit easier to deal with. The units are very interesting and the tutors are always helpful and responsive.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager and others within my lab are always happy to help me in any way they can/know how. There has also been a very good level of communication between the employer and my apprenticeship provider.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Always plenty of support is offered where the tutors know they can help. Even if they can't assist in some aspect, they are able to point me in the right direction on where to find assistance.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There are definitely some transferrable skills between the two. Learning about workplace regulation helped me to better understand the regulations that I must abide by in my own workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Sometimes, there are social activities to take part in. I have been to 1 networking event at my old college as a matter of fact, and that was very cool; to be able to talk to some students who might be interested in an apprenticeship, just as I was.

  • Yes

  • They took me on and gave me a chance to start my career somewhere, the starting wage is fair, and they hand-on experience you gain is unparalleled and invaluable in developing your professional portfolio.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Labcorp?
  • Be confident in the way you sound, research the role ahead of time to get a head start, be friendly and sound like you have a real passion for the sector, as well as a keen sense to learn.
