  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to design fitted kitchens. This involves taking measurements of the space and creating a design of fitted units that functions effectively for the homeowner. This requires spending time with the client and listening to their needs then choosing the appropriate layout and products.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt practical design skills, developed knowledge on how to use the design software. I have gained confidence in fact finding by using the right questions. Also listening and recording the answers throughout the process. I have learnt how to survey the site, and adapt the design to work with any room features.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been enjoyable to follow and gain new skills and knowledge. The pressure to complete the programme whilst working full time was difficult at times. I enjoyed the interaction with colleagues who were also completing an apprenticeship.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was very well structured and my apprenticeship coach implemented several techniques for us to ensure we were organised in following the programme. She spent time with us to ensure we were keeping up with deadlines and understanding what was required of us at each stage.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from my overall employers Travis Perkins was good. My line manager was very anti me completing apprenticeship work during work time which caused a lot of pressure to complete work in my own time.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There was as much support as I needed from my training provider. Particularly when doing my functional skills exams. I was given access to lots of resources to help me with revision.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel the qualification is a great confidence builder, this, along with the skills and knowledge gained in the programme help me improve daily in my role. I have the knowledge to impart to customers and the skills to problem solve in order to get the end result they are looking for in their kitchen.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are social events regularly arranged such as simulator racing, mini golf, Christmas meal. There is also inter branch football matches that take place from time to time.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Travis Perkins Plc to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel the ethos within the team I work with in Travis Perkins is hardworking but fun. There is great interaction with customers which helps build a solid regular customer base. There is support for all members of staff with their development, physical and mental health. Safety is at the forefront of all they do.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins Plc?
  • I would suggest to research the company understand their mission statements and their priorities and make sure these are values you would like to buy into. Then ensure you have the skills or are willing to learn the skills required to do the job successfully. Then go for it.
