  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working on the shop floor with licensed engineers to learn as much as possible about the aircraft and how to maintain them. As well as completing our coursework and exams to gain our qualifications. I am usually assigned to an engineer working on an aircraft who I can learn from and gain experience with.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Most of the skills I have learnt have been quite practical. Learning about how to use the different tooling to maintain the aircraft, as well as keeping a high standard of quality have been the main points of development for me. With our exams/coursework, my academic skills have been improved, learning the information needed to help with aircraft maintenance to go along with the physical skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • This is a career I have always wanted to have so being able to pursue it is an amazing feeling. Work is quite varied from day to day so I never really get bored of it. Being able to learn from more experienced engineers really helps me and makes sure I am never stuck on tasks for too long if I need help.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Before the apprenticeship started, we were given a clear schedule of the whole program so we knew what was coming up, as well as what was in the future in terms of exams and coursework etc. We rotate between the two major departments in the company every 6 months so we can experience all sides of the business. Although our apprenticeship was extended, a clear plan was made as to make sure we completed it in a timely manner.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our assessor has been really good with making sure we keep ontop of our coursework/exams with regular meetings, as well as having an open line of communication with us if we are ever stuck on anything. Our deadlines are always set clearly, as well as our work is marked well with clear feedback.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • When we were with the training provider, we made sure to do both our written exams/coursework, as well as having some hands on workshop and hangar practice as to make sure we were prepared for going back to the real hangar to work. This experience of training beforehand made me a lot more confident working on the real aircraft. I think the

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some opportunities for extra curricular activities. We usually have both a summer and a winter party for the whole company where everyone gets together for a social. We also play sports outside of work (for example football) when the summer months come and the weather is better as to have a bit of team bonding.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Airbus to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think its a great company to work for with a good apprenticeship program that helps to turn people into licensed engineers. I think some parts could be improved, but overall I think I would definitely recommend it. If you have a passion for aviation or engineering, I think it will really suit you.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Airbus?
  • When applying, I would be sure to showcase any previous experience you have with engineering as to make sure you stand out. Airbus look for enthusiastic individuals so make sure you showcase your willing to be part of the program. Academics is not a necessity, so dont be put off by that, but the course is quite challenging too.
