  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as a network apprentice engineer which involves fixing and maintaining virgin media’s network. Each day I am sent fault tickets which detail the location of the fault, the severity and the type of fault. These faults range in severity from minor to major. Major faults are service effecting and need to be resolved as quickly as possible.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills. The first is time management as I am now responsible for my own workload. I have also learnt how to troubleshoot and fix problems I encounter when working on virgin media’s network. I have developed my team working skills through working with a new group of people.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program with virgin is run well. I am given clear roadblocks to meet and i have regular meetings with my manager to ensure I am meeting these and am happy in my role. However I am less satisfied with the way my training provider has aligned with virgin media.

  • I receive lots of support from my employer. I have regular meetings with my manager to check how I am feeling and to identify if there are any areas I should work on. • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I do have regular meetings with my training provider where they discuss my progress and offer help. This is helpful when I need to write my portfolios. However they not very responsive with the more pastoral care side of things. However I should note this is all done face to face which I feel always has less of a personal and approachable touch.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel this qualification will really help me progress and perform in my role. It will open doors for me to progress in the future and become an expert in that area. It provides me with wider knowledge which can assist me in my day to day role as a network engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been invited to professional network events where I met other apprentices from around the country. This was a great day to network and make friends. I have also attended team building events which were great for building my skills but also sharing knowledge. I feel virgin runs great extra curricular activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Virgin Media O2 to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend virgin as I feel the company is based on teamwork and helping others. I have felt welcomed by everyone and feel I can approach anyone if I need help or have questions. I also feel they provide great opportunities for networking and progression which have made my experience much better.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2?
  • I would say during the interview be yourself as genuine personalities always shine through. I would also suggest asking questions and preparing a few before an interview. One of Virgins values is curiosity so this is something they look for in candidates. Finally I would say try and have fun and don’t be too serious.
