Software Apprentice Review

I've been working with this really cool equipment that tests systems. Sometimes I get to go to workshops with suppliers to learn about new tech and how to use it. I've also been leading the charge in solving problems with suppliers.

Throughout my journey, I have acquired an abundance of valuable real-world skills. In particular, I have come to appreciate the significance of methodologies such as AGILE in engineering organizations. I have been challenged to step outside of my comfort zone, and in doing so, I have discovered that software engineering encompasses far more than working with Visual Studio Code and having a sip of coffee.

I personally enjoy this programme immensely, even going as far as to say this is close to my dream job of innovating and incorporating new technology into our future vehicles. Sometimes things are slower, but that's all part of the hustle to perfect the next big thing.

The structure of our university studies can definitely be improved, that's also to say it's a fairly fresh course therefore bumps are expected. However, the content taught is high relevant to the modern "real" working world and teaches valuable topics that can immediately be applied in any workplace.

The employer is just as important as the university. From past experiences, and experiences of fellow apprentices, JLR has been nothing but amazing at providing support for it's employees when needed. You get that true, "part of a family" feeling from JLR for sure. Be it from health, mental well being or simply negotiating time for your assignments, the important things are always considered carefully and you'll be sure the support is there for you.

There are plenty of opportunities from your line manager and the early careers team to achieve any key objectives you require to finish your course. It's just as important to an apprentice to share these with their manager so that the right placement can be found. Overall, you're still an apprentice and JLR recognises this, so it's as good as "feel free" to open your horizons and learn new things- or apply what you've learnt where you need to.

As best as it gets. All training is real world applicable, not just in JLR. The topics discussed are being used in nearly all technology companies across the world and JLR is an exemplar for following the industry and keeping to paces with modern practices. Anything learnt at university, can easily be applied or made use of in your work place, and if it's not obvious, you can always make it applicable to your project!

There are a lot of extracurricular activities taking place within work and university. Regular socials allow apprentices to gather and socialise, while the university side helps apprentices to take up new hobbies just like any regular student.

Any day, a lot of my friends have actually decided to follow my footsteps to get into a JLR apprenticeship. It's definitely worth the experience, support and competitive salary. It's definitely much more useful than university as you apply what you learn- everything is useful rather than plain theory.

JLR is your for if you're practical minded and like things done. If you want to be at the forefront of innovation, it's all open doors for you. Be ready to get practical and show the interviewers why they should choose you over others. It won't be easy, but the "future-potential" is way worth it over university.
