  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I now have a Software Testing role, in one of the many teams working on the systems for one of Capgemini's major clients. This involves use of various different technologies, and the mindset of "there are always issues to be found". It is mainly logic based - A technical knowledge of developing is useful, but necessarily essential!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before joining Capgemini I had only a very basic understanding of programming (aspects of Java 7) - I now have a much greater understanding of: - Object-orientated Programming - Creating/using Databases and DB queries (SQL/PL-SQL) - Software Testing - Inter-personal skills for use in the business - Driving - Indirectly (joining the scheme allowed me to fund my driving license and a car)

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I massively enjoyed being on the Apprenticeship Programme, and continue to enjoy the other aspects of working in Capgemini (it is a full-time job now), such as being able to work with companies/groups/schools in the Community as a part of ongoing Capgemini initiatives in addition to my daily role. I also know that if I do feel like a career change, Capgemini can support that because they are such a big organisation.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Capgemini?
  • I feel valued by Capgemini - In my role, I am trusted with pieces of work as any other member of my team would be, contributing towards a successful delivery of software for the client. I also know that if I have any issues my managers are all very approachable.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme was well structured, with a 3 month Accelerated Learning Environment at the beginning to improve my technical knowledge (giving me a good base for joining my team).

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • At first, our assessor was not coming to see us regularly. However, after a conversation with QA, the issue was resolved, and our new Assessor was visiting us every 3 to 4 weeks to ensure work was being completed as expect, and to support us with anything we had issues with.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Capgemini has been very flexible, making allowances for my QA work, and being reasonable with expectactions of me as an Apprentice. If I have any problems (in coursework or day to day work) I know that all members of my team are ready to support me, particularly with ex-apprentices on the team who went through a similar system to me. I have also found my Apprenticeship Management to be very approachable, and find they actively change the programme following feedback from us as Apprentices (for example, including more business days within the Accelerating Learning Environment).

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary/package more than meets my costs, meaning I can put money into a savings account and buy things I would otherwise not be able to have. I also place money into the Capgemini Pension fund through the flexible benefits/package offered, and have the opportunity to have access to vouchers, private health care, and donate to charity, amongst other things.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • As previously mentioned, there are many opportunities outside my normal remit. For example, another Apprentice and I are both working with a local school, and I am also going to be part of a week of charity fundraising for Children in Need in November. We also get the opportunity to work with newer Apprentice intakes...ex apprentices helping apprentices! Last year, I was taken to the Skills Show at the NEC as a result of being a part of the Apprenticeship Programme, at no charge to myself. To make more opportunities for yourself, it is best to be outgoing, and ask your manager/Apprenticeship management for anything - there is nearly always something you can do, you just have to show the initiative and find it!

  • 9. Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • All of the above - I've felt supported in Capgemini, and have so far enjoyed learning as a part of my intake, and working as part of a team for a tangible result.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?
  • Be yourself - If you don't, then you may find you don't enjoy your job, as you would have been taken on under the wrong appearance. Try to put down everything you've done as well as school qualifications - Capgemini love well-rounded people, who have been involved with other activities...work experience, clubs/groups outside of school/college, all of this is helpful. Get noticed - Anything which sets you apart from the other applicants...the initial judgment of you will be made within a few short seconds. Make those seconds count!
