  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in maintenance as a controls engineer. This is an electrical based job role which includes using a lot of software. Generally, I shadow the controls engineers as some of the systems we maintain can be quite complex so I am learning how they work. As it is maintenance we need to fix issues that arise in production.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot when I am at work. sometimes there can be organisational issues, but for the most part, the programme is good at work and at uni. I am learning a lot from the controls engineers that I shadow during the day, and I have the ability to go on placement in different areas of the company.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was often poorly organised at the beginning of the apprenticeship (both at work and at university). This was due to a lack of communication between management and the apprentices. However, this has improved over time as I have made more connections and am able to be more independent in the workplace.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a great deal of support from my employer. My manager has been incredibly supportive and has taken the time to ensure that I am fully integrated into the team. My colleagues have been incredibly supportive and have made themselves available to answer any questions I have or provide guidance on specific projects. I feel comfortable approaching them with any issues or concerns, and they always offer practical solutions and advice.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive good support from some of my teachers but I am slightly disconnected with the training provider. There is often organisational challenges regarding lesson timings or assignments and there can be late notice for some things. I feel very supported by one of my teachers but not much else.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification I am working towards through my training provider has been extremely useful in helping me perform better in my role as a controls engineering apprentice. It has given me a better understanding of the theoretical principles and practical skills I use at work. I am confident that completing this qualification will enable me to take on more complex projects and contribute even more effectively to my team.
