  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Whilst on placement, I got to work on audit engagements where I would assist the team with testing through picking samples and documentation. We would have regular internal team catch ups to determine our progress, as well as external meetings with the client, where we could ask questions and seek clarification.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Working with teams of varying sizes remotely and in person has helped to develop my teamwork and communication skills. I have strengthened my leadership skills by helping to coach more junior members of the team, which is a skill I hope to continue to develop. It has also been useful being exposed to different clients, as this has enhanced my business acumen.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed the programme. The combination of university and work placements has given me the best of both worlds. It has been useful putting into practice what we learn at university and this has reinforced my understanding. It has been stressful at times especially when studying for modules whilst on placement, but the sense of achievement when passing exams makes it worth it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured with spending one term on placement and one term at university each year. It is great that the course allows me to fast track my career, as by the time I graduate, I will have completed 12/15 ACA exams and will only have to complete the last three once I start full-time work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • PwC has been really supportive. We are given a buddy, a career coach, flying start champion and programme manager and all these people have been really helpful to me during my placements, and keep in contact even when we are back at university. It has been great having a range of people I can go to for advice.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We study for 12 of the 15 exams whilst at university and are taught by university lecturers. We have regular lectures, as well as smaller group seminars which are good for reinforcing our understanding. Whilst some of the lecturers have been amazing and will go out of their way to help you, there have been some modules where we basically taught ourselves, so it was good that the ICAEW Study Manuals were useful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the modules we learn at university do help me to perform better in my role. Especially modules such as Audit and Assurance and Financial Accounting and Reporting, as the knowledge we gain from them is very relevant to the job and can be put into practice on placement.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • In my business unit, we have a social committee who organise regular social events, such as bowling and ice skating, which are great for team bonding. They also organise an annual away day, Christmas event and summer event. There are also sports teams to get involved in such as football and netball.

  • 9a. Would you recommend PwC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think PwC is a great company to work for. Everyone is really friendly and welcoming and they have really helped me to settle into the firm. They have really helped to fast track my career, as I hope to be fully qualified by the age of 24 and I have really enjoyed the exposure to a wide range of clients.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC?
  • The application process is competitive so it is important to stand out. My advice would be to research the PwC competencies and demonstrate why you think you would be a good fit at the firm. It is important to have an understanding of the role and the company and demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for applying.
