  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I help out with data collection and measuring cars to help analyse faults and maintain quality. This involves using a feeler gauge, laser gauge and gap gun to obtain measurements. I also help out with problem reporting when a new model is being produced so that the information can be handed back to the supplier or relevant person.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to use a lot of different measuring equipment and how to ensure that the data collection is accurate. I have also learnt how to identify a faulty component that may cause an anomaly in the data. Other skills I have developed include, interacting with a team and approaching new faces within the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the hands on and technical side to the job and learning. It is the best way I take on new information and develop my skills. I do not enjoy desk based work as much, but I still enjoy the satisfaction of completing these tasks and looking at the numbers from the data I have collected.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Within the business, everything is very organised and communication is clear. It is easy to talk to other departments and learn more about the business. However, sometimes the communication between work and college can break down and has caused issues in the past. However, nothing major has gone wrong and everything does eventually work out.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support when I need it from anyone I approach. Sometimes, it seems to be difficult to manage and check in on the large amount of apprentices. Sometimes it is difficult to approach someone to ask a question if work is busy, because it can feel like my question is not as important.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The course has proven very difficult this year and sometimes getting support has been a challenge. However, with a bit of reminding and if you are sure about what information you need, the lecturers and course leader are always happy to help. They try very hard to ensure everyone is always on target.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have been taught a lot of practical skills from college that I have applied to work and my personal life. Through learning about engineering, it has given a very good insight into how the business works as a whole and how to maintain a high quality standard at all times.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a couple of people I know who organise a football pitch one night a week at different times to accommodate for different shifts. I was doing this very regularly at the beginning and it allowed me to meet people from all over the business and I started seeing more familiar faces on site.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There has been a lot of skills I have learnt that have improved my personal life and when I have been faced with difficulties outside of work the support has been there from a business perspective and on a personal level from the people around me. As well as meeting new friends and being faced with lots of new opportunities.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • There are lots more job roles available than I first anticipated so I think for anyone applying it is important to find a part of the business that interests you and try to follow that. There is no harm in applying to somewhere you might not know very well because you will learn so much more as a result.
