  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I problem-solved complex projects as an individual and as a part of a team to achieve targets. Effective leadership and creativity were involved when attending site checks in various types of locations out on busy roads and residential cul-de-sacs, adhering to Health and Safety legislation. Liaise with clerks-of-work when complex issues arise. Trained to use big high-end equipment and machines safely and accordingly such as fibre blowing technology.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • No, I have not learnt any new skills because I have not been able to test myself out in the field. You are still a trainee and they pressurise you instead of helping you learn from your own mistakes. I certainly have not developed any new skills either whilst working for around 10 months.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do not enjoy my programme at all. Throughout the 1 year apprenticeship, there is too much work. E.g. home studying, training away from home. Living away for a week and coming back for the weekend. The training structure is all over the place with no communication. They feed you with excessive and unnecessary information.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not good at all! No communication with the 4 managers I have had in 8 months. No communication from the trainers to the managers when booking ourselves in with trainings. Unorganised in terms of feeding you with repetitive training in the wrong order.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • No support at all. They do not reply to your emails unless you call and pester them. No helping hand if you are struggling at work or at home. They do not guide you in the right direction and expect you to know everything straight in the deep end.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Training providers cut corners. They do not teach well in classes. They just want to dismiss you especially when the Head of Training is not on site monitoring. Each trainer has a different way of teaching which is understandable, but they teach you wrong. Every trainer has different views on training. If you fail, not enough feedback is given.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I personally do not think it makes any difference to me. Especially when the qualifications they provide you is irrelevent to my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Nothing at all.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • No


  • 9b. Why?
  • Full of miserable racist people. Older generation. Ex-army workers so they are quite hard on you. No communications within the company AT ALL. Get taught different things each week. Underpay you. Unnecessary excessive training for a year. Cannot accommodate to your needs. Mess about with your pay and do not solve it quickly.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be strong, communicate with the company, keep your foot down, speak up when necessary, learn the trade yourself, do not be afraid if you think you are going in the wrong direction.
