  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I do my personal admin tasks such as sorting my emails and teams messages as well as helping with the group inbox. I take and work on tickets that have come into the queue and spend a lot of time shadowing other team members to learn what they do and skills for the job I want.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When I began my apprenticeship, I had trouble even turning on a laptop and now I am helping other team members work on various tickets which I have learnt the skills to do. I have also been given many opportunities to improve my public speaking skills at various events.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it, I have such a variety of things to do each week. As with anyone, I find the coursework boring but it is manageable and linked into my work so it does not feel like a chore. The stay away courses are great as you get to meet mentors in person and others on the same or different courses to you.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My course is pretty well organised. From the first week, I knew the dates of all my stay away courses and I knew how the entire course was going to be laid out, from what I was going to learn to how the final assessment was structured. The coursework dates are slightly less defined, but this allows for personal flexibility and time management.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is amazing at support. As I have to spend a minimum of twenty percent of my time on learning and studying, I get given a day a week to use as an apprenticeship day while being able to use more time as needed. My employer assists with the costs of getting to my training courses and encourages me to learn more.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Firebrand as a whole has a very knowledgeable and dedicated team who support and guide you through a lot of aspects of the course. For each course, we have a mentor who has worked or studied in the field of what we are learning, so that we can be provided with the highest quality of teaching.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like the course is providing a lot of theoretical knowledge that I would not learn while doing my job, but this helps as I can then view problems in a more analytical way as I have a greater knowledge of the background workings. Overall, the course and the job compliment each other.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have just signed up to do some football, and there are loads of talks that you can either give or listen to. In my area, we have an apprentice group that meet for lunches every now and then and plan activities. In my office, we have a walking group and plant growing competition as well as a long running ping pong tournament.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • they are a very understanding employer who offer a range of qualifications and experience. They are a very competitive company which allow for very good pay and benefits, but also exposure to more of the industry. I have also found that on a whole, the company is very diverse.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Go for it. As a company, they focus a lot more on soft skills when hiring, so do not be afraid to apply with no knowledge or experience about the job you are looking at. I would also advise learning a bit about the company, what it does as it is not all phones and WIFI.
