  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Cyber Security Apprentice at BT is to support the business in cyber operations and secure software development. I work on code projects, usually in Java or Python to support cyber platforms used by BT, such as McAfee ESM (SIEM).

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • - Python programming - Java programming - Use of Cyber Defence platforms such as SIEM and Crowdstrike.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship. I have learnt a range of new skills in technology through my rotations and university work. For the most part, the atmosphere and people are great. Rotations can vary in terms of relevance to qualification and quantity of work available for apprentices.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The cyber security apprentice programme in Ipswich started in September 2021, hiring 5 apprentices including myself. There was a lack of organisation/structure.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From my experience, there is not a-lot of support from line managers. However, mentors/friends/colleagues in rotation teams are highly supportive and have helped me progress my skills throughout my apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Staffordshire University assigns an academic mentor for each student. There are regular meetings and paperwork to do, which tracks progress. There is lots of support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This varies depending on rotation. The qualification I do at university is relevant and supports my work in my current rotation. Both are relevant to cyber security and secure development.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are opportunities to promote the BT apprenticeship scheme in events and key dates such as National Apprenticeship Week. Social activities exist for graduates, but are still being set up for apprentices. I am looking forward to getting involved in this.

  • Yes

  • - Learn new skills in IT through university and work-based experience and specialise in your preferred area. - Rotation scheme allows for a breadth of skills and greater likelihood of job satisfaction (You can choose rotations best for you). - Great atmosphere, opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues and meet other young professionals.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • - Research the company. - Learn about BT goals and values (e.g. Personal, Simple, Brilliant). - Show enthusiasm and a passion for technology and learning.
