Technical Apprentice Review

My role involves completing multiple rotations around the plant in all of the engineering related departments. These rotations usually last around 6 weeks giving me an in depth insight into the work that is being done in my company. The work can vary from big CAD projects to smaller day to day line call outs solving issues.

I have learnt many new skills since the start of my apprenticeship at Cummins, due to the wide variety of work I am exposed to. There are many different physical tools I have used before, as well as many different software's and CAD programs which I have had to learn.

I am thoroughly enjoying my program and would recommend to anyone considering it. The work I am doing is enjoyable and although sometimes challenging it is very rewarding. I am also enjoying my program due to the relationships I have built with my fellow apprentices and the connections made with workers in different departments.

The program that I am on is very well structured and organized. I have set college days which do not change so there is never any confusion with that. The apprentices at work follow a Rota which makes it easy for us to know what we are doing, who with and when.

I receive and have lots of support available to me. This support is available in many different ways such as, through the training documents created for apprentices to use to learn new software's/processes; Through my mentor or my line manager and also through fellow apprentices and the workers in my placement departments.

In general the support from my training provider is good with most lecturers being helpful, looking through my work and giving formative feedback on ways of improvement. I also have a work based learning manager which I can go to if I have any queries. As with every college/school their is the odd lecturer who gives a alack of support.

The qualification being delivered to me through the training provider is relevant to the day to day work I complete. There have been multiple occasions in which where i have been at work and been asked questions by my fellow employees, which i have been able to answer due to the knowledge I have gained at college.

There are no social activities or sports teams available that I am aware of. However through my company all the employees partake in EEEC which is essentially volunteering within the community to help other people out. Examples of what I have done from this including out at local schools with events and also attending career fairs.

The apprenticeship I am on gives me the opportunity to gain a high level of education at the same time as being able to have an enjoyable job and gain experience. There is lots of room for internal progression within the company and the support you receive from mentors and peers is excellent.

The Cummins apprenticeship gives you the skills to peruse a career in many different aspects of engineering. You are trained up and exposed to all sorts of work such as quality and manufacturing engineering and only in your final year do you have to decide which route you want to take.
