  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, i am investigating into failures with our engines that are seen at customers, and using quality tools such as ISHIKAWA, 5 why and 3 p to understand the root cause of the failure. I then plan to put a step 3 action in place to ensure that the root cause will not be seen again. This must be introduced within 48 hours. And a step 6 is introduced within a month.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to develop my application of a range of different quality tools which I have learnt during my time at college, on my BTEC, HNC and HND. I am also able to develop my existing communication skills as well as my ability to present my projects, findings and ideas.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program greatly. The technician side of my job role is wonderful, and i have lots of support on a daily basis which means I am able to get my job done to the standard that is required of me. I also enjoy the structure of the apprenticeship that cummins have created.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme at Cummins is very well structured. We work as part of a mentoring scheme which allows the Burdon of management to not lie on one single person, as well as exposing everyone within the system to management skills early on. The college side of the program is not managed as well, but that is down to the provider.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of work from my supplier, both for my work and my assigment work at college. There are multiple people within my department and other departments who are more than willing to help me with anything that i require, and there is always someone who is more knowledge on the subject to be able to assist.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider has decreased in the amount of support they are able to provide over the past 5 years i have been with Warwickshire college. This is due to staffing issues that they are dealing with, which has directly caused myself and many other apprentices delays in starting the NVQ, finishing the NVQ and being able to start the EPA. This has caused me a great deal of stress, due to having so much work on, due to the college being understaffed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As previously mentioned, there are things that i have been able to learn during my college course such as quality tools that i am now required to use within my daily job role. I have also been able to learn things about mechnical principles which help me understand the dynamics within the engines we build.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Cummins is an inclusive and diverse place to work, and everyone on site is polite and friendly. It gives lots of development opportunities in terms of education and work. When the effort is put in by the employee, they are able to go far within their career. This is also supported by managers.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • Be open and honest. Think about how your hobbies and interests reflect on you, as a person. (Rugby makes you a good team player). I would give the advise to start early, as it helps you develop within a more professional environment which ensures that you are sensible and profession at all times.
