  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program very much, the first year is based in college full time which helps you learn basic practical skills and a basic knowledge of engineering which sets you up nicely for when you come into cummins. However, the apprenticeship could have more structure in work to help build skills up before going into more challenging work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure is organised to an extent as there is a college course there for you as soon as you start going full time and then after a year day release, i know what i need to learn in college but in work there is no targets of what i should learn in each area.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from the employer is the best in the area, they always look after you and make sure work is a safe and clean environment, any problems or difficulties can be discussed with various people. The Union and Plant work together to make sure that the people on the shop floor are heard by the people above.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider, derwentside college have a lack of communication with both students and the employer so unless you are attending the college and there in person it is very difficult to resolve an issue, however the teachers there are very good and look after the students making sure they know the work and they deliver the lectures very well.

  • The level 2 qualification gives you basic engineering knowledge and improves your practical skills whereas the level 3 gives lots of background knowledge and start to understand engineering a lot more which does help you in the job role, the HNC has really helped me, i feel my knowledge of engineering and my job has improved a lot since starting

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are lots of things that you can do, helping out the community is a big one for cummins so you are able to do a lot for charity and volunteering work during works hours, a lot of people also partake in football after work depending on the shift.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Cummins is one of the best companies to work for in the area, the way they look after employees here is great and you are never thrown in the deep end, expected to do something that you are not comfortable doing, i have met a lot of people in cummins that are now friends.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • Make sure you know the company inside out and the history before applying as Cummins like to keep the tradition that they have keeping themselves at the top and being a great employer, make sure your keen to do the job as someone who isn't bothered about what they are doing and doesnt want to learn doesnt stand a chance.
