  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Every 6 months I rotate into a new team. My role is made up of apprenticeship responsibilities such as hosting visits, organising volunteering opportunities for my cohort and mentoring students. In my operational role I work as a scrum master and help to project manage a high priority project. I work with software engineers to ensure the project runs smoothly.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My confidence is one of the skills that has massively improved. When I first started I didn't think that I would have accomplished half the things I would have. I have also learnt the basics of coding and learnt a lot about agile project management. I have also learnt how to network too.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my programme although ,I am at the final year of my apprenticeship I have learn so much and had some amazing opportunities and experiences. alongside the experience of working on real projects it has been wonderful working with my cohort of apprentices as They have added so much value and support to my overall experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The way my programme has been structured works very well. I get every Friday as a dedicated study day so I have plenty of time to complete my university work. Additionally, if I ever need extra time near deadlines, I am also able to take that time to complete my work. There is always enough work for me to do and I love the fact that I'm able to rotate into a new team every six months as that in itself has given me such a wide range of experiences.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • BT is extremely supportive and throughout my whole apprenticeship my line managers have been fantastic. Whenever there is an issue, whether that be personal or something related to the programme, they have always gone above and beyond to make sure that they can provide the right level of support. BT and its employees genuinely care about our development and the operational teams have always been more than willing to help me learn.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support from my training provider has been varied across the programme. Some lecturers have been very supportive and gone above and beyond to ensure that any questions or queries I may have, have been answered however there has been an equal amount of times where support has been very poor and things such as not replying to questions for weeks on end and receiving mis information from the course lead has been an issue.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There have definitely been certain elements of my university course that have supported my role for example I found the project management module extremely helpful as that's something that I use quite a lot in my day-to-day role, especially when it comes to principles of agile project management. However there have been certain modules where I feel like it hasn't related that much to the operational work I do and as a result I have struggled with some of the more technical heavy modules as I simply didn't get any experience related to these modules outside of the university course.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There have been lots of opportunities for extra curricular activities for example we often meet with apprentices from other companies and arrange visits normally for us to visit them and then afterwards they come and visit us. Additionally there are always networking events or things happening at BT that we are encouraged to get involved with for example volunteering is something that we have had lots of experience doing which has been fantastic.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BT as the opportunities that high have got throughout my apprenticeship programme have been fantastic and I have been able to do things I never would have thought I could do when I first started. It's clear why BT is one of the best rated apprenticeship providers in the country and they genuinely care about the apprentices and there is a lot of thought that goes into the scheme and how we are supported.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would advise people to make sure they understand what BT does and really look into some of the cool projects to show that you have a genuine interest in the company. BT really values those who are passionate and have a real thirst for learning so if you can demonstrate that in your application I think that would be really beneficial.
