  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role at wates is essentially an apprentice bid writer. my daily tasks include managing knowledge centres and helping answer bid questions for current projects. i interact with many people daily such as my team members or other people throughout the business. i sometimes interact with people externally when i need information that is not readily available internally, my responsibilities involve keeping track of our projects and staff experience and much more.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed many new skills while being at Wates. I now have improved my time management as i need to stick to many deadlines. I have learnt how to multitask as i need to work on multiple projects at a time and i have learnt more responsibility and initiative while being here.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying my programme currently as it has been a really smooth process. everyone in the business has been so welcoming to me and its a pleasure to be in the office and see my colleagues. the work is manageable and we all work well as a team. wellbeing events make sure that everyone can relax every now and then.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • i believe my programme is well organised as my training provider has regular progress reviews and works very close with me to make sure i am up to date on all that i need to do. within the workplace, my line manager has monthly 1:1s with me to make sure i am keeping on track of my responsibilities and so i dont feel neglected.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i receive huge support from Wates as its clear they care a lot about their employees, not just as an organisation but also on an individual level. as i mentioned we have wellbeing events which means we can interact with each other in an informal and social setting. i am constantly reminded of the people who i can go to for support and i always feel comfortable talking to my colleagues

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • i also receive huge support from RHG too as they are always making sure i am up to date with my learning and i dont feel forgotten about, they always make it clear that they are there to talk to if necessary and if i need help with assignments they are always there to help

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i think that my role and training coincide extremely well and the topics that i cover are mostly relevant throughout the apprenticeship which mean i am more prepared for my day to day duties but i am also more clued-up on what i should be writing in my assignments, i would argue that the role i have helps me to understand my training more than my training helps me understand my role

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • as i previously mentioned there are multiple events every year relating to wellbeing and social activities, such as drinks or nights out, sustainability events, walks, away days and many other examples of social gathering to keep up morale and increase networking within the business. its not stressful to work here as i know there will always be a wellbeing event around the corner

  • i think its a company that clearly cares about its employees, everyone i have met have been a pleasure to meet, there are many perks that come with the business, there is also a clear opportunity for a career and growth when you graduate from apprentice, i tell my friends all the time how nice it is to work for wates

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wates?
  • i would just say to be yourself and be nice to everyone you work with because everyone else is lovely, if you like who you work with then it makes working easier, set lots of reminders as there are many daily/weekly duties you need to remember and as always just put effort into the job because its worth it
