  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • It involved different presentations and tasks relating to the commercial sector of law, with a combination of individual, small group, and large group activities. For example, there were debates, the opportunity to give a presentation to the large group, and chances to tackle legal cases and tasks on your own.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • Firstly, due to the session on commercial awareness, I gained confidence in thinking about how current affairs can affect businesses, and the legal teams that work alongside them. Also, the Lease task, I was allowed to develop my interpretation skills, by understanding more complex legal jargon, and to also pay attention to detail for any small errors in the lease.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my insight, both with the in-person day and the virtual week. The in-person insight day really gave me a perspective of what it could be like working in one of the most modern and innovative law firms in the uk. The virtual days also gave me more of an insight into the roles of legal professionals in the commercial field, which i found a lot of value in

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • The insight was very organised, with emails being sent well in advance to allow time for preparation. There was also a launch event before the virtual week started, which gave us more information on the platform that would be used and the tasks that were going to be set for us.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I could see myself very easily working at Pinsent Masons. Their culture is very diverse, and after having a couple of conversations with solicitors and trainee solicitors, I discovered some initiatives that are working towards bringing more women into positions of power in the firm. For example, in the most recent round of partner promotions, it was a 50/50 split.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • I had already applied for law at university, and definitely had interest in the commercial sector, although I was not firmly set on that. However, after this week I have been reassured in my decision to aim for a career in the commercial sector, hopefully at Pinsent Masons one day!

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • Although I was not paid any money for this experience, I feel that I have gained a wealth of knowledge from it. Also, during the in-person day, there was a lunch provided for the students that was free of charge, as well as snacks and refreshments throughout the full day.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • We were given the chance to work in small groups for a lot of the activities, which meant that we could get to know and network with other students on the programme. As well as this, there was the option for networking lunches, which allowed us to connect with students we may not have worked with, as well as trainee solicitors during the in-person event.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Pinsent Masons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The atmosphere was very welcoming, and the experience itself is not one offered by many other multinational law firms. Every trainee and solicitor, as well as the early talent team, were very friendly to talk to and were very open to answering any questions or listening to any concerns you may have had.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • The application process itself was very straightforward, and offered a lot of opportunity for each student to put across their academics and their personal life, and it provided many chances to show what sets you apart from other applicants. I would recommend that students should make the most of the three application questions given, as that is your main opportunity to show how you are unique
