  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am am Manufacturing apprentice in Ware working for Glaxo Smith-Kline. I am involved with tablet manufacturing within GSK's OSD site, working with a small team to make & produce tablets treating ammonia. I work on what is called the "Continuous Tablet Line" which supports product manufacture from start to finish.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained engineering knowledge within the workplace due to the current job role I am in. My job tole has allowed me to get involved with building machinery & this is something I'm gaining interest in because of this. I am also learning about production processes but this is more complex.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The apprenticeship as a whole is a worthwhile experience. I am been offered opportunities which I would have never gained in another job role. Taking study days in the week is a nice change of scenery for me as it allows me to learn new skills outside of the workplace in a more theoretical manner.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • After some periods of uncertainty at the beginning of my apprenticeship, I have been fortunate enough to make a structured idea of the route I would like to take on my apprenticeship. I believe it is important for an apprentice in this field to take ownership of their journey & find a path of their choice.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • GSK as a whole are very supportive with my requirements as an apprentice. Certain personnel deal with situations better than others, but that is one of the challenges of working in a busy environment. Colleagues who understand apprenticeships are much more supportive than those who have not experienced such a job role before.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support I receive from my training provider is absolutely great. I learn virtually & doing this can bring unexpected challenges. However, the training team are always on hand to support & the lessons are designed in a way which includes virtual learners. I am very pleased with my training provider & would like to continue with them in future.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Certain terminology is used within tutored lessons of which we then have to research & write about. When coming back into the workplace, I can hear these certain phrases being used which gives me confidence in my written work as well as my practical elements too. This gives me a boost when talking to colleagues as I can match their level of communication.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • In terms of social events within the workplace, there are many different opportunities for people to come together & enjoy some social or relaxation time with other colleagues. As an apprentice, there are lots of organized social events which are very light hearted to really get the best out of everyone & ensure everyone enjoys time off work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have recommended GSK to a number of friends who have gone on to apply for apprenticeship roles within GSK. Two of these people have been successful with their applications & have started, or will start their chosen apprenticeship soon. I do this because I realize the benefits a GSK apprenticeship can bring to a young person.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • I would suggest to others who are applying for an apprenticeship to think about what they want from their workplace. I believe a hard working & social person is required who also enjoys their time off. If you can utilize time management, that will be key to a stress free job role.
