  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role as a data science apprentice in pharmaceutical research, I primarily focus on analysing large scientific datasets. I create effective visualisations to predict drug efficacy and safety, which aids in the selection of strong drug candidates. Additionally, I code tools for scientists to use, ensuring efficient and compliant data analysis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As data science is the bridge between so many different disciplines, I have had the opportunity to learn skills in software development and engineering, maths and stats, and my GSK context, biology and drug discovery. Learning through being in the workplace has also offered me skills in leadership, matrix working and communication.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I don't have any regrets about pursuing my apprenticeship with GSK. The theory that I have learnt from my learning provider has been fantastic, the development opportunities that I have been offered have been amazing and the vast knowledge and skills of those I work with are second to none.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well structured. I know what I am doing in every module in every year at uni and I know where I will be working for the duration of my apprenticeship, whilst still having room to shape the direction of my career through regular development conversations with my manager.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • GSK support me and value me both as an employee and as a person. They consistently invert in my development and provide me with the tools to succeed in my role and in my studies. Everyone around me is understanding of the potentially stressful times periods that may come with being an apprentice, and support me where they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My uni has been fantastic at supporting me through gaining my degree. I have been assigned a tutor, who is also an academic, with whom I meet with to ensure good course progress and wellbeing. In terms of academic support, we are able to message our academics and receive a prompt and thorough response.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am often able to connect what I am doing at work to something that I have done at uni (and vise versa), leaving me a strong theoretical foundation for work application as well as context to what we learn at uni. This has meant that I am constantly learning and applying my skills and knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work there are many employee resource groups that are available for anyone and everyone to join. I have been a part of many including the netball team, where training is held after work in the on-site sports hall, and the health and wellbeing community, a group of people with an interest in promoting good overall health in the workplace.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend GSK as a place to work as both as an employee and as an apprentice, I feel genuinely valued. My work, learning and development are all taken seriously and the culture of the workplace makes it a pleasure to do my role. I love that my role is improving the lives of patients across the world.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • To anyone who is thinking of applying to GSK, I would give the classic advice of being themselves. The application process is just as much about whether the company is right for you as you being right for the company, which is something that is often overlooked by those who are job-seeking.
