  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day to day I install new phone and broadband lines at customers properties, they can be either copper or fibre optic lines. I also find and fix faults that develop on existing lines. This is often up the telegraph poles, in the green cabinets at the side of the roads or sometimes in the customers property.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of skills, some of these have been developing my computer based skills further, also learning how to interpret test results on out hand held testers. I have also developed my problem solving skills and practical skills such as using hand held tools like drills precisely and often at height

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it, so far I have met lots of new people which has been great. I have found the training has really helped me in my role and also in my day to day life. I have been given lots of opportunities to learn more and develop and I have felt well supported

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is really well structured and very well presented to us. Learning has been a mixture of on line learning, learning on the job and also learning and practicing new skills at various training centres. I have felt well informed and have been able to look things up in the appropriate places when unsure

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel that I receive a lot of support in all aspects of my work and training. I have many people I can ask for support - my supervisor, other supervisors, my manager, my assessor and other trainers are all there for support and guidance plus there are my other colleagues that I can turn to

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lots of support, both hands on practical support plus support with my online learning and also my portfolio of work that is required for me to complete my apprenticeship. I can contact all these people by phone, email, text, teams meetings and also face to face when required by me or them,

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification will ensure that I have the knowledge and expertise to enable me to perform my job to the best of my ability. It means that I get the opportunity to develop the existing skills I already had and transfer them into my role at work. It will make me a more competent engineer

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, definitely! There are lots of opportunities to join in with charity events, sporting events and social events. There are days we can take to volunteer at local charities or where we can do things such as tree planting in the local area. These days are very important and a great opportunity

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have felt very well supported and very accepted since I started here. I have learnt so much already and feel that I will always be learning and developing throughout my career here. I would not hesitate to recommend them to family and friends as it is a great career


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Give it a go! You will be starting a great career with Openreach where there are no barriers to what you can achieve in your life. There are lots of opportunities to learn and develop and whatever you decide, there is the training there to support you in your role at work
