  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am working in a construction management role at a preoject in Mayfair, London. My day to day roles and responsibilities include ensuring the day to day safe operating of the site. Currently we are in the bulk-dig phase of the project so I have carried out QA checks on our contractors works. Reviewed the upcoming works and worked to form a delivery strategies.

  • The skills I have developed so far on my apprenticeship have been: - Confidence and public speaking sills when delivering talks, presentations and meeting to contractors and clients - Time management skills to ensure I am prompt with hitting the necessary deadlines - Technical knowledge of building industry as a whole as when I joined construction I had little/no knowledge of the sector.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship programme I am on as it gives me the ability to combine my university based knowledge with real-world experience, something which is invaluable to employers and sets me above my competitors. I find construction both challenging (as there are always new problems to solve) and also very rewarding when you can stand back and look at what you have achieved.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well structured. I attend university once a week and work for the other 4/5. The 'emerging talent' team within Mace provide you with training sessions throughout the year that supplement your learning on key aspects within construction. In the early years of my apprenticeship I was given a buddy to help support me as I was new to the industry. I also carry out quarterly 1 on 1 sessions with my competency accessor who checks on my progress and points me towards new topics to learn/ research.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am studying at London south bank university. We have lecturers for each of the topics who can provide support for our learning, these are available during our class times or via email. I have had some communication with a member of the university support team who helped set up my 20% of the job training tracker.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification will be in civil engineering which is very relevant to the work I carry out day to day. I can see how the structural design I carry out in class can relate to the real world structures and the technical knowledge I learn at university helps me to understand the decisions designers and contractors make.
