  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Electrification and Plant apprentice for Network Rail. Wer get to experience: Distribution- Dealing with feeder stations, signal supplies. Plant-renewing points heating, generator maintenance, submersible pumps. We also get an appreciation of the overhead line system, carrying out various maintenance tasks and the planning office, looking at how they analyse and calculate maintenance figures. And finally we get an appreciation of track and signal discipline.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had already completed the BTEC Diploma in Engineering that we recieve in the first year, but the instructors are second to none, helping the information sink in next time. I have learnt a vast array of wiring skills, mechanical knowledge and improved on my maths since being a part of this apprenticeship

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • One of the best experiences of my life; Meeting new people, making friends, learning new skills and getting paid to do it! Cant go wrong :)

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Network Rail?
  • Although during the apprenticeship we are not technically allowed to be used in place of a full time employee. Apprentices are welcomed by everyone and people are always willing to help.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very much so! We are out on the tools majority of the time with 'Work Based Learing Reports' to complete (20) outlining what we have learnt, sticking to specific subjects. Along with a daily diary and regular 12 week reviews to ensure we are staying on track and enjoying the experience.

  • As mentioned, we are always recieving 1-to-1s and everyone is always up for a chat.

  • As mentioned, we are always recieving 1-to-1s and everyone is always up for a chat.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I have heard that other apprenticeships have a slightly higher pay package. However Network Rail's is more than suitable for my age group (19) and when we have to travel for training purposes, all food, accomodation and travel is paid for by the company! Can't complain at that :)

  • 9. Would you recommend Network Rail to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Puts you in an excellent position for a long successful career and the training, skills and qualifications you recieve are second to none.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • Just do it! Its cheeper than uni, but with similar qualifications and more chance of a good job at the end :D
