  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Role is to connect homes and businesses to the network infrastructure by installing Fibre Optic Cables, nodes and other types of equipment which ultimately results in having decent internet speeds. This means working safely and and planning out the work setout before me using risk assessments from job packs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills. These include but are not limited to: Splicing. Stripping Cables Installing Nodes and Joints, Introducing Cables, Elements and the fibre optic cables themselves into nodes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Absolutely love it. By far the best job I've ever had.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Really well organised. We regularly review the progress of my learning in typically monthly reviews which keeps me on track.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Loads. Everyone in the company is so accomodating. If ever there's something I'm unsure about, there's usually someone who has the answer. Other members of staff; managers and colleagues alike will tend to go above and beyond to help where they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lots. If there's something I haven't quite completed or if I'm unsure about something, my training provider will always do what he can to help me.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Knowing safe in my mind that I have been given the correct training and guidance means that I can perform any task safely and without any concerns. The fact that I am more confident, means that I naturally do better at the job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I believe there are, but I have not as yet enrolled myself in any extra-curricular activities.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Great Training, so many perks at work, Good Salary, Good Work-Life balance, Plenty of Overtime available and progression opportunity if desired. By being part of this company, you are part of a family.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Thoroughly understand and be able to express the imperativeness of safety if fortunate enough to get to interview. This is absolutely paramount for working as an Openreach Engineer.
