  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role is to maintain electrical work on site. No day is the same here, one day you could be installing lights and changing the bulbs and the next you could be doing testing of circuits. You will do all your training inside the academy where you have instructors who will be helping you through your training.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I came straight from school so had zero experience with any electrical knowledge, since joining AWE I have learned skills that will be helpful in my apprentice this includes; conduit work, tray and trunking work, installations of circuits and all about the theory of electricity. You will also go to college one day a week which will also benefit you and your learning.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • As no day is the same here you have good days and bad days but overall i have really enjoyed my apprentice here at AWE. I have met so many amazing people who have become great friends and colleagues, Due to there being so many people here if you get stuck and need support there is always someone who will be able to help.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is well structured and organised, you will complete your training in the academy then you will be given placements out on site where you will put all your skills and training that you learned in the academy to the test. Once you've completed your placements you will then become a qualified electrical maintence person

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is a big thing here at AWE and have won awards for the support they give for mental health! The support from the work placement is amazing if you are ever struggling with anything there is always someone who will know how to help you or guide you in the right direction if there is someone else who can help. Never be afraid to ask questions either as there is no such thing as a silly question here at AWE.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The instructors and management in the academy are absolutely wonderful. They will help you so much and will be able to provide you with support the whole of your apprenticeship. They are always willing to help you with your training and they will also help you with your college work if you get stuck and need help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualifications that I gain through the apprenticeship will help me massively with improving my performance in my job. As I came straight from school I had no clue what I was doing when I first joined now however due to the training I've had in the academy and at college I am able to complete loads more

  • AWE is such an amazing company to work for they provide constant support for you inside and outside of work, you have lots of annual leave to you as you like, there is always overtime available to you if you wish to do it. We also work 5 days a week one week then the next week you will only work 4 days meaning you get every other Friday off!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
  • My advice would be to Join AWE doing an apprenticeship. Always ask questions even if you think it is a stupid question as there is no such thing as a stupid question. You may think this might not be the right thing for you and you may worry if your doing the right thing by applying but believe me its one of the best thing I have ever done!
