  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Provide super fast fibre broadband to all types of customers daily around Birmingham city, this involves going ton to customers houses drilling out and fitting a fibre cable, fitting an ONT to their wall and router then bringing a new fibre cable from to pole or manhole to the house and fusing the fibre together providing them with internet.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Existing skills I'm a lot more comfortable and confidant talking to customers now as I'm with them everyday. Driving a van everyday has helped me get a lot more comfortable on the roads. I have learnt a lot of new skills as this is a brand new career for me, from climbing poles to opening manhole covers before the real work even commences

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Enjoying it thoroughly even though learning something new and having the extra work can be overwhelming as I'm doing the day to day work which I'm still getting my head round some days are easier than others some go smooth some I haven't got a clue what to do that's what patch leads are there for.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The work side is very well structured as we're all in chats together, hard to get hold of people sometimes as the teams are so big but people are there to help, the apprentice side is also well organised as there's a lot of learning involved in this and new portals to learn how to use

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We as a team have weekly team talks sometimes more than one if there's new or a lot of information, that helps you keep updated with everyone in your patch, managers can be busy so we turn to buddy's or patch leads who can be a massive help for new recruits

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • This week was the first time we really started doing anything about the apprenticeship side of things, a lot more information to take in and new learning portals to update and get use to adding work into, luckily we can email a coordinator if we get stuck and they seem helpful

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Helps and works you to become a bit of a perfectionist in your work as its very health and safety based and very customer focused. To complete to course and gain the qualification you have to be able to show and prove you can do the job to a high standard

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Its very early days for me at the moment as I started in January so I haven't heard much about any extra curricular activities but I'm sure there will be football teams and etc to join, and now the bars are opening I can imagine a few social interactions with colleagues

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • First time in my life I've had a career and something bigger and better to work before, a company you can rise if you put the effort in which i am very willing to d, first year will be difficult but rely on support and learn every time you're stuck and also just enjoy it, Openreach is like no other job I've ever had.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I had no skills required for the job and basic qualifications, so I would simply say to be your self, be calm, polite, friendly and chatty in your interviews or interactions with anyone from Openreach everyone I've met have been great so far and everyone enjoys the job, work hard have a passion for the work and enjoy yourself.
