  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In the morning I log into My Jobs and retrieve the days schedule of work, I then go about planning my day and which job I shall go to first. I then call ahead and speak to the customer and confirm that they are in and have no symptoms of Coronavirus and then head on over to start the work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to splice fibre optic cables and have honed my DIY skills in particular cleating as its not something you tend to do everyday but in my role as a FTTP SD Engineer its something I do almost daily. I was always confident with drilling, being an avid DIYer but I haven't experienced drilling into strangers houses prior to joining Openreach.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I felt really quite stressed out when I initially went live as I felt I was unprepared for the jobs I was going to do. However over the last few months my confidence has grown vastly along with my knowledge and understanding of the FTTP SD role and the wider network were working within. This coupled with the limited experience has meant that I am now quite often having enjoyable experiences.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is early days at the moment but it does seem to be quite well structured and there appears to be quite alot of resources available and time invested into helping apprentices complete the required tasks to qualify at the end of the course. I am looking forward to my workshop days and gaining a better understanding of how things progress.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel as though I receive good support from my manager and my team. They have been available for calls and on occasion they have also sometimes come out and visited me on site to assist with jobs that are more complex or require someone with additional experience in order to complete the task.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have not yet completed any workshops since my original go live date back in March of this year but so far I feel that I have received a good level of support and information from my training provider to help me work towards my qualification at the conclusion of the course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel as though I am working towards a qualification that will give me all the necessary skills in order to fulfil the role of a Fibre To The Property Service Delivery Engineer to a very high standard and it will give me the foundation for a career within Openreach.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Every Friday my team engages in a team call where we all discuss the week and we also choose a music genre and send to our manager our chosen music tracks from that genre. This provides much needed engagement and team spirit in a very difficult and challenging time such as Lockdown

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Openreach to a friend or member of my family as I feel that it is a good company to work for and that the work we do is interesting and varied. I also feel that the benefits package that they have put together is also very good.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would simply say... show you have a passion for working with the public and for working for a company on the leading edge of modern communications. I would also say that if they like working outdoors then this is certainly a role that will fulfil all of the above.
