To give yourself the best opportunity, spend a significant amount of time tailoring your application to the job description and person specification. Networking is extremely important, call the contact on the application to gain information and to show enthusiasm. If you are in a position do so I would definitely recommend volunteering to gain experience, that's how I started off.
