  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Pulling in fibre cable and expanding the network for openreach and its customers, testing the ducts to see if they will allow cable to be pulled and then routing the correct cable in the correct ducts. Provide answers and good customer service to any potential customers and correct use of company resources.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt alot in a short space of time, I know now that there are many different cable types and that they connect to the property in several different ways, and my job is to match up the two and lay the cable. I have learnt how to correctly use the tools for my job, power tools and electronics

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am loving the new role, I have so much to learn yet and that keeps it exciting, any training i have received is engaging and job appropriate, also we are taught by people that were on the tools so know the job and know what's the best way to do it

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am fairly new on to the program, but at the moment the training is structured to help you get the most out of your training and organised so that everything is laid out in the pathway so you know what is up next and how you can prepare for it.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • we receive great support for Openreach, we have training leads for when on apprenticeship work, we have managers who help you with the business side and what is expected of you and then the lads that we work with day to day that are available for support and guidance when on the tools

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have not taken any part in this yet but what we have been told is that they are always available to help and that there are no silly questions, they also know what your going through on a day to day basis and that allows them to tailor and guide you through this.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • the training and qualifications that i will obtain and have obtained i need to do the role, everything that we are being taught directly impacts the job and the day to day requirements for me to work correctly and safely. plus i will get to improve upon my english and maths which is useful in all forms of life

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • i have been made aware of a few but due to the current global pandemic i have not yet taken part in any such events or activities. there are a few sports clubs and also the offer to socialise with a few of my colleagues once restrictions are lifted in my area.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • just through my experiences so far they seem like the type of company that i would easily recommend, and i have done so to many of my friends and previous co-workers to varying degrees of success. i will continue to do so as i feel that people i know would benefit from working with openreach


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • just to be yourself and be honest, follow and trust the process and keep an open mind especially if this is a new industry. also to enjoy the experience and make as many friends as possible through training and on the tools. don't be afraid to ask questions and get stuck in
