  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an engineer is to carry out daily repairs and maintenance to the telephone and broadband copper and fibre network. I get different jobs daily and each scenario is different every time. I have a range of different tasks to complete each day ranging from providing lines to repairing them.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a range of skills whilst working at Openreach for example, climbing poles, finding earthing faults, repairing loops, providing new lines, repairing lines, telephone exchange frames repairs and this is only a few of them. These skills I use on the daily for my job. It has been good to develop these skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I found my apprentice ship to be very fun and enjoyable. I met different people and got by different teachers each week. The classroom work and teaching could of been a little bit more attentive but other than that it was quite thorough. I had multiple lessons a day and teaching.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structures programme is like being back at school as an adult. You can take it how you want to and pay attentions how you want to. I like being able to go back to the hotel quickly after the day ended. The programme also included good duration breaks and personal time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot of support was given by the employer, they were understanding of my learning difficulty and were helpful at the times I neeeded. Some teachers were more preferable to others but that’s a given. Everyone was there to learn to everyone was trying to help each other out.

  • I feel that the programm e was very helpful towards re minding me of what I learnt at Croydon teaching facility. It made me demonstrate and explain my role and the process for safety, work processes and custom service. I found the process quite helpful to starting out as and engineer

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I believe there was, due to covid 19 nothing has been able to happen. I believe Christmas events and other sort of events happen. This I would of liked to been able to do as it would of meant I could of got to know the team quicker and more personally

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach is a great job a part from in the winter. In the summer you have such fun, being in the sun and that. In the winter it is a bit cold and gloomy but then you have to remember summer is around the corner. So yes I would recommend Openreach.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would just say not to be over weight for one. But to also be prepared and happy to get their fingers dirty. You can’t also be scared of heights due to the whole limping poles part of the job. It is a great job with a lot of perks to.
