  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Usually involves full fibre broadband installs to a customers house. Sometimes I will be fixing faults in customers houses who already have fibre broadband. Sometimes doing surveys for an upcoming fibre install to make sure everything will be ready for the day of the install. Sometimes will pick up an assist to go and help another engineer on a job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt a lot of new skills so far. I had no idea how fibre worked or even what it looked like. I can now do full fibre installs on my own. Also developed even more customer skills being in a customer facing role dealing with different people every day day in day out.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It’s good to be outside everyday in different places and seeing and meeting different people. It’s nice to help the customers who have a really poor broadband service then to provide them with super fast fibre broadband is rewarding and it’s nice to see that the customers appreciate all the work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I haven’t had an apprenticeship workshop yet so I am not too sure but I have had all my invites sent out in advance so I plan and organise my work around that and also absences have been booked so I can solely focus on my apprenticeship in these days.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a lot of support from other engineers out in the field and also our supervisors. The training could do with being a bit longer as there are some big gaps from when you finish your initial training period to when you are out on your own doing your own jobs.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am not sure on this as like I said I haven’t had any apprenticeship workshops as of yet. I have met my assessor online on Microsoft teams and he seemed very nice and helpful so I cannot see there being any issues with support in the future at all.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Again I’m not sure on this as haven’t had an apprenticeship workshop yet. But the training that was provided in the initial training block which was focused on fibre was very helpful, although I feel there could have been some training provided on copper as we come across that every day.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I’m not sure on this due to COVID I haven’t been started long and obviously activities have been put on hold at the moment. However in our workgroup social media pages there are a lot of people posting about there hobbies and what they like to do outside of work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It’s a good secure job. Good company to work for and lots of help provided, the money is good and there is a clear structure for promotion from within if you are wanting to do this and work hard which is always a good thing in my eyes instead of outside recruitment


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Listen and take on board as much help as a is given to you and if you are not sure on anything always ask the question. Everyone is always very helpful and willing to help and explain or even show things to you if you are not sure on them
