  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My daily tasks consist of Accounts preparation, financial reporting and insight advisory. I also can undertake bookkeeping tasks, as well as working on my apprenticeship. I frequently undertake internal RSM courses to widen my learning, such as unconscious bias training. On a day to day basis i deal with client information.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, on top of the courses i attend with BPP as part of my apprenticeship, i also attend plenty of internal RSM courses provided. Recently, i have attended courses that strengthen my written and verbal communication, as well as improving my ability to work as part of a team. These courses have been detrimental to my career progression

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is quite stressful, but equally as rewarding. You make friends at the beginning at RSM on training courses, which helps build connections you can use going forward. I still keep in contact with colleagues i would've otherwise never even met or spoken to! The culture is great, it's very diverse and accepting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pre covid, everything was well structured. From RSM's perspective, everything was laid out well. I don't want to judge RSM's structure based on COVID's timeline, because they weren't to know what was going to happen or how long it was going to go on for.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my Line manager. She frequently checks in with me to see how i am doing and getting on. I do think there could have been improvements relating to COVID however, such as slack given for those who were significantly affected by COVID. Being able to stay exam ready when you cannot take exams is something even i underestimated the difficulty of, and I felt as if it wasn't really appreciated

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I think this could be improved on. Teachers do say during courses if you need help to contact them, but replies are slow, if you even get one. Staff at BPP do contact you sending a generic email asking how you're getting on, but more often than not you'll get a different response to the same question from different staff members

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the actual contents of the courses is quite good, it really helps to educate me on different parts of Accounting, however i think sometimes the quality of teaching can be a little sporadic. Sometimes you might get a really good teacher, and sometimes you may get one who overcomplicates things. I can't be too harsh on this though as it will be the same with any education provider

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, but during COVID this has understandably slowed. We frequently get emails on networking events we can attend localised to our area, as well as having sports teams such as a 5 a side football team in a local league. We also have staff socials that we can go to

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Working at RSM is very rewarding. They give quite a tailored experience in the school leaver programme, and cater to different peoples needs. But, also, the people who work for RSM are accepting and helpful. The firm holds good values which i can agree with, and address topics that they don't have to, but do for going above and beyond

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
  • for those applying for RSM, i would say to read very carefully what you are applying for, and try to connect with someone, possibly on LinkedIn, who has worked for RSM or even in the Accounting industry. I went in to it pretty blind, and although it worked out for me, i can understand that for some, this approach wouldn't work at all
