  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a trainee engineer I work on the fibre broadband network. installing and fixing fibre networks to customer premises. To do this I will install a cable either over head or from the underground network to a customers premises and fit the equipment inside connecting the network by splicing at either an internal or external splicing point.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a whole new range of skills as well as developing existing ones. I now have a much more improved understanding of the internet and data network and have gained many skills on installing and fixing faults within the fibre network. With previous customer experience I have found openreach to expand on that further as I am now working with customers at a personal level being in their homes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed learning a whole load of new skills and enjoy the freedom of being on the road and seeing places you may not normally see. Openreach and the team I work in have been very welcoming and made my start as an apprentice a very enjoyable one.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From the beginning I have had a very strategic laid out plan for my apprenticeship which was mapped out for me since my induction. Before I started training I was given intense training and studying before being mentored by an experienced colleague out on the road. We have weekly team meetings to update us on things and ask questions, there is also always someone that can help on the phone if you are unsure on anything.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • After working many jobs I can say that I haven't received as much support as I have with openreach. I have many numbers for support from either managers, patch leads and employee support. They have a great HR team which will help you even with the most personal things.

  • Everything I have learnt in my training and on my apprenticeship has been greatly rewarding when being on the job. I felt confident being out on my own within the network. I have learnt a great deal within my industry and feel there is a lot more for me to learn

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We use workplace and have many events and social activities organised there. There are many extra classes you can take to further your knowledge and meet other colleagues. They also do events so you can meet experienced engineers and learn other parts of the company and positions we can apply for.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They have a great training programme and are very welcoming of new recruits. They have plenty of support and are patient with taking time to help you learn and craft your skills. Although I work alone I never feel alone as I always have someone on the phone I can contact.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • If you are applying for openreach I would recommend being patient as there are a lot of applicants. If you do get an interview I recommend doing your research and learning a little about the company to prepare you. once you have a date you will enjoy it and feel welcomed as soon as you enter a training center.
