Aircraft fitter apprentice Review

As an aircraft fitter you are required to undertake the tasks set out during the start of shift instructions, these can vary from day to day, I am a systems fitter which is specific to installing flying controls, fuel systems and electrical systems. Typically I am allocated to the same team and undertake similar tasks day to day.

During the apprenticeship I have learned the ins and outs of the aircraft and the different manufacturing techniques that are used in the production, I have also gained a detailed understanding of the theory behind flight and the mechanical principles that apply by attending collage on day release and completing an extended diploma

I really enjoyed the program, the structure allowed me to learn the theory behind all the practical work that I was undertaking in the workshops and training programs that I was doing. During the apprenticeship there was also the opportunity to take part in team building events that I really enjoyed.

The programme was really well organised and structured, I knew exactly where I need to be with my studies and practical work throughout the programme. It was easy to get help and guidance from the company if there was any uncertainty, even when there is a global pandemic the company manages to keep structure and organisation.

There is a lot of support on offer from the employer, regular meetings and one to ones with early careers managers ensures that they are kept up to date with my progress. There is a supporting culture in the company and it is very easy to reach out and ask for help or guidance when it’s required.

When working towards qualifications the training provider was very helpful, structured lessons and expectations were set out early on and maintained through the apprenticeship, whether it is academic or on the job learning the training provider is very supportive and accommodating. Whenever there is an issue or help is required they were more than happy to help

In my role it is vital to have an understanding of the inner working and mechanisms of the aircraft, through my training provider I was able to learn a vast amount about the components that I am assembling on a day to day basis, I felt that it was really helpful to have this knowledge and understanding

There are a lot of extra curricular activities going on in the company and with the training provider, in Airbus there is a GenA group set up to increase the social activity with the apprenticeship and to bring together all the different sections from manufacturing to engineering and finance apprentices’s

The sky’s the limit in terms of personal development. It is a company that encourages its employees to try and develop there skills and move forward.

The most important thing is to have a positive attitude towards learning, it is very specialist field of engineering and the technology and techniques that are used in the manufacturing, these require a different understanding than other industries. An open and approachable personality will allow you to thrive in this environment
