  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Sign on for the day using my mobile phone, pre start van checks then drive to site. Meet the lads and go over the days tasks, could be pulling in cable or CBTs which contribute towards the full fibre network. Check each others work to make sure it is up to standard then on to the next job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Fibre skills in the telecoms industry which enable me to do my job to a high standard. Pulling cable as well as operating various different pieces of equipment to enable me to pull fibre cables into the underground network. Building boxes ready for equipment to be mounted as well as various safety aspects to the job I.E NRSWA to teach me how to work safely in the street.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my programme, the workshop sessions with the assessor are really good and helpful towards my EPA. I will be honest and say as a cabler it has been difficult getting certain forms of evidence needed to go into my portfolio and I do find the course aimed towards more service delivery.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is rather well organised and the structure makes sense. The course is very simple and we are given all the support we need with our assessor who is a very approachable person. They deliver the workshops well making sure everyone is on the same page before continuing. Again it could be more generalised to allow for other parts of the business to obtain evidence a little easier.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Each time I meet my manager he gets me to update him on how I am doing with my apprenticeship. I am able to communicate with him about what I need however this isn't always easy when it comes to working in the field. Time I find is a bit of an issue as sometime you can feel a little pressured into getting the job done before you've been able to get evidence for portfolio.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My assessor gives me all the support I require during my workshops as well as being active when if you need to speak to them regarding any portfolio work. I have found during our workshops people are able to understand clearly what is required of them and with the support of our assessor we're all on the same level.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I will be honest I do not really feel that the qualification makes all the difference. Since going live finishing basic training I have been stuck in completely. When we are working I am able to work where my team require me. I find the qualification may provide a little confidence boost however, you are already fully doing the job before you even get your qualification.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There have been a few online gaming events promoted on the in-house social media however I have not taken part in these. Due to the COVID pandemic all out of work events are postponed. We do try to get together as a team when work permits us, this is usually limited to smaller numbers.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • If I wasn't happy I wouldn't work here. Some days can be tough but I find the job rewarding. The company has many opportunities for growth and a clear ladder to climb if that's your thing. The option to move around the businesses in different roles is what I tell people when I mention my company and tell people about my job and my own goals. If they like the sound of it I guide them towards the application process.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be yourself. The company is looking for people who turn up on the day to behave like this at all times. Company image is everything. Learn about the business as in, what are the goals of the company. Prove you have done your research to show how much you want this job.
