  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I perform analysis of company's accounts and help to both create useful data and to try to help explain the numbers. I do this with a lot of work on excel as well as using powerpoint to create the reports. A lot of time is spent using excel which can be good or bad.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Definitely. I have really developed my excel skills hugely, as well as my attention to detail when it comes to presenting. My accounting skills have also developed through on the job learning as well as from study days. I have also developed my professional skills from on the job experiences.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • There have been times where I was not enjoying myself as much as I hoped I would but I have started to really enjoy the work that I am doing. I enjoy the people I work with and the work is interesting and varied. I await the post COVID era to actually meet the team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is pretty well organised and structured. I have had to chase my teaching materials on a few occasions from the study provider which was very annoying but overall the structure has been fine. There is still a lot of time to go yet but hopefully it continues as is.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support. I have spoken to several partners who have expressed their desire to help where they can and this ethos is consistent throughout the organisation. I have received a lot of support from other Grads and/or recent starters and we have developed a good repour.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have received a decent amount of support. Several of the modules are self taught but the ones which are harder get real teachers in which is useful. I would like to receive our materials earlier as we currently have a short window o learn, revise and perform the exam.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Tremendously. I use the information I have learnt on a daily basis and the information I learn on the job will be useful in my exams. We had study right at the start of the programme which was really useful as I came into the job with atleast a base of understanding.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a variety of activities that in non-Covid times I would be involved in. There is a 5-aside team that plays every week as well as plenty of opportunities to go out after work for dinner/ something to drink. When we're able to, I'm looking forward to this.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are an excellent firm with a reputation that really can help. The learning has been excellent and the clients are interesting. The main thing I have been impressed with is the people. They often say it is the people who make the firm and that's definitely true here.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • Do your research before applying, or at least before your assessment centre/interviews! They won't expect you to know a tremendous amount but an awareness of the market would be very useful. BDO put a lot of emphasis on being yourself so I would recommend just that when applying.
