  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an audit trainee the role involves assisting seniors with the audit of entities. This primarily involves testing individual financial statement areas to ensure they provide a true and fair representation of the company's financial situation as a whole. In addition to this, as a trainee I take ACA exams every few months.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a large variety of skills throughout my brief time so far at the firm. One of the most the most obvious is my new timekeeping skills, this is predominantly due to the fact that I have to balance a full time job with my studies for my upcoming ACA exams.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have found my time in audit so far very enjoyable, this is predominantly due to the fact that there is a lot variation in the jobs you are doing. In audit, you change the company you are auditing every few weeks, this means that you gain a thorough understanding of how a variety of companies operate.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme so far has been very well structured, we are provided with a variety of contacts at various levels of the company who we can discuss any problems we are having within the firm. We are given a few weeks off to study for each set of exams, meaning we can go into each exam feeling like we have been given appropriate time to prepare.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • BPP have been an excellent training provider so far, they provide you with all the study materials well in advance of the course beginning, and when the course does commence the instructors provide you with a comprehensive review of the entirety of the course. In addition to this the instructors are available individually to answer any questions you may have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification really consolidates the knowledge and gives you the confidence to be able to apply what you have learnt to your day-to-day work. In addition to this, the qualification teaches you things that may not be relevant to your day-to-day work but provides you with a more well rounded viewpoint as to why things happen in business.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately, as the United Kingdom has been in lockdown for the entirety of my time at the company I have not been able to meet up with any of colleagues in person yet. However we have been able to do various quizzes online, and I have been informed that once the world returns to normality there are a variety of social events put on by the company.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BDO provide quite a unique opportunity to blend real life experience with time studying at college which is invaluable at such an early stage of ones career. In addition to this everyone I have worked with so far at the company has been incredibly friendly and always more than happy to help you out with anything you need.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • One of the most important things when applying to BDO is to be truthful in the reasons why you are applying to the role. The interviewer will be able to notice as soon as you start lying or giving an answer that you think they want to hear. It is always easier to be honest.
