Underground Cabler Review

My role is to provide cable whether fibre of copper, the cable is installed underground. I always work with at least one other engineer, safety is a priority as I use winches and other heavy machinery in my role. Jobs are given out via an app, all details that you are likely to require can be found in what is called a job pack.

I continue to develop my skills but as yet I have not learnt other skills.

I am coming to the end of my apprenticeship, the experience on the whole has been very good with great support from my assessor. I have enjoyed the experience and learnt subjects that I didn't realize I could like ICT skills.

The program and structure of the apprenticeship is good on paper, more directed support from managers would be useful particularly during the buddying phase, it would be more beneficial to buddy someone who actually wants to be a mentor/tutor.

On the whole I have not had to ask for support from my manager, I get the impression my manager does not see my apprenticeship as something to be involved with. However plenty of support from Openreach.

My assessor has been very supportive and helpful, nothing has been to much much trouble and full credit should be given.

As an underground cabler I have at times struggled to see the relevance of ICT skills that said any form of educational input is useful at some point in your life.
