  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a daily basis my tasks would involve surveying onsite to provide area/volumes to site manager, CAD work on the laptop creating 3D models for our onsite machinery to work to, setting out levels onsite for works to proceed, providing engineering support onsite to managers and creating drawings for clients after works are completed.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my time completing the level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering I would continuously learn new skills as it worked hand in hand with my current work load. Since undertaking the level 4 in Project Management, it's been difficult to put into practice whilst at work as I do not work within this area but I am keen to move into this.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme didn't get off to the best of starts as we started in the middle of the Covid outbreak in the UK. Our tutor's were 'non-existent' at the time & I wasn't too sure what we was supposed to be doing. They were never there to mark my work or help guide me through any issues. I feel this has hindered my progress somewhat already. The course itself is all slideshow based & I am struggling to take on board the information from these. I've only just been made aware of the textbook we're working from... 9 months in. I've also only just been made aware of the end point assessments & exams that we're touched on at the start but never properly explained. We have recently been appointed a new tutor who is really helpful but this is 8/9 months too late in my eyes.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As noted in point 3, up until now the programme had no structure at all. It's only in April (9 months in) that we have a new tutor who takes it upon herself to offer the help and guidance that was needed from the start. As noted in point 3 again, I feel I've made a good start to the programme but don't feel I've learnt a great deal as I'm struggling to take on board the information from purely slideshow based learning. Hopefully now the new tutor is here, she can mark the work I have submitted and we can get back on track for the end goal.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • At the start they were helpful, allowing us to have a meeting room for 1/2 a day once a week to focus on the programme but then workload picked up and this was soon long gone. Luckily for me (in some ways), I was placed on Furlough at the start of Feb & this has allowed me to proceed with the course theory.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I haven't been enjoying the course thus far down to the rough start we've had with tutors leaving, not marking work, not thoroughly explaining the course, no other learning being provided other than slideshows after slideshows. In a way, I feel the course was simply passed over to me (as a learner) and I was expected to find my way through off little information provided. As discussed above, I'm hoping this changes now the new tutor is onboard but I feel this has impacted me greatly.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I'm hopeful that this course will open new doors for me & my working career as I would like to progress into project management further down the line. At the moment I haven't been able to put anything into practice. My aim is to achieve this qualification & access the 'job market' to see what routes would be an option.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I'm not aware of any extra-curricular activities through work. Outside of work I enjoy playing golf, meeting friends, watching movies at the cinema, playing the xbox etc. I've recently bought my first house so at the moment this takes up all my time getting everything set up correctly.
