  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Providing fibre broadband to customers all around my local area. This could include climbing up a pole to span the fibre to the customer's house or I could be opening up junction boxes and feeding the cable through a duct underground up to the customer's house, it can vary everyday.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I've learned how to splice 2 fibres together to be able to get light from the CBT through to the customer. I have also learned many safety procedures that you must adhere to when doing things such as climbing a pole. I have also learned how important it is that everyone stays connected and is able to communicate with their loved ones/friends especially during these difficult times.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it. I love the fact that no 1 job is the same and everything varies. I also thoroughly enjoy the fact that I am out and about all day going to different customers premises and it is a very sociable job. I like the fact that you never know what you are going to come up against in your job and I like the challenges it could sometimes present.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised. I have been sent and shown a very clear schedule of what the year will be consisting of and what I need to in order to pass. The trainers obviously have an vested interest in us passing and that they will do everything they possibly can to help us pass and realise our potential.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a very good amount of support. My managers are always offering their help or making sure that we are aware that they are always there if we need to talk to them about anything and making sure I am comfortable in my role, which I appreciate very much.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive the best support. My trainer is always asking if there is anything that we are unsure of or if we have any questions which is a massive help. She understands that not everyone is able to work at the same pace and appreciates that so no one feels neglected or left out.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification training helps me work better in the field as it reminds me that occasionally its worth standing back and having a thorough think about what other options there are to take or would I be happy with that work if it was carried out in my house by another engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As of yet I don't actually know of any outside work activities, because I'm fairly new I just wanted to crack on with getting my work done to the best of my ability and haven't really had a chance to explore the possibility of any other activities that my colleagues potentially do.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT is one of the biggest and most popular companies in the country. There main goal is to provide everyone with the best broadband and best connection possible, ultimately giving everyone the opportunity to stay connected and be able to call/video call their friends or loved ones especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. BT also has extremely good job security as the demand for fibre/broadband is not going to decrease any time soon. It's a brilliant company to work for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Don't be disheartened if all the information is not going in or not making sense. I was losing confidence because I didn't think I was right for the role because I felt like I was getting overwhelmed with all the information and job roles/duties. It will all come in time and it will almost become second nature.
