  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is office-based day to day with the occasional site visit. most days are spent responding to queries by email, raising works orders, liaising with subcontractors, pricing works, and controlling funds on existing projects. Most days are a little repetitive but I think this is down to the current climate.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills, I came into this apprenticeship with very little idea of how the commercial sector of construction operated having only worked on the physical side beforehand. I am now much more proficient with programmes such as excel and other the perform similar functions

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program. it has been a little different from how I imagined it thanks to Covid but overall it has been fun as I enjoy learning new things. I felt welcomed from Day 1 and was made to feel part of the team this has continued through out and has gone a long way to making it an enjoyable experience in troubling times.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel my program was lacking in the structure department. I joined a team that had never taken on an apprentice before. covid disrupted my course as well as my ability to shadow and communicate with my colleagues. Aside from this though managers and team members have gone out of their way to help if it is required.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • my employer provides support, I personally haven't made a huge effort to utilize this support, but it is clear that it is an option. Be that officially or in a monitoring or communicative fashion. Again covid has stretched a lot of people's ability to provide support with out disrupting their own work flow.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my training provider isn't a major player in my apprenticeship, they use other colleges to provide the training that has been a massive help. all teachers and secondary staff have been extremely helpful and worked hard to ensure we have been provided with quality training. I think this is something that should be looked into at involving companies and training providers more access to students.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Very little. my current course is being used to give me access to further courses. therefore it hasn't been very applicable to my work. but it has given me more knowledge about the field I work in. on an industry level it has been helpfull just not on a job or role level.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Kier provides lots of extracurricular activities to get involved in such as football teams, charity work, volunteering. socail events. they also offer 5 days of paid leave for reservist personnel. kier make an effort to invite and involve as much of their staff as possible in these events when possible.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Kier Group, they provide excellent progression as well as training opportunities. they are not afraid to hire people with no experience as long as you are willing to learn. They recognize hard work and reward those people for it. the also make you feel welcome and appreciated

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
  • I would advise them to be honest and open about why they are applying. tell the recruiter why you want to join, what your ambitions are and how you want to be treated. remember you are choosing them as well as being hired by Kier ask them what they can do for you.
