  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a trainee engineer providing internet and telephone service to my local region via the copper network. I deal with customers face to face and work on the network at all points.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills including as this is a trainee role and I have learnt a lot about the copper network but also some of the fibre network. I have developed my customer service skills further as each job is different.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy being hands on and dealing with the customers on a daily basis. I like learning about the network and developing my skills on an ongoing basis.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured and well run by the person that delivered my apprenticeship. She was supportive and informative about all the various steps required and I would highly recommend this programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support both in the field and via the phone. Always have people on hand and various training available to improve my skills

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lots of support in all aspects of the qualification. We have different modules which all needed an element of guidance and I was never lost in what was needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the training helps to enforce some of the knowledge you have obtained and also helps to show you a structured approach to some of the daily tasks if we did not know them already.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a few things within the team that I can get involved with but nothing like sports or social events at the current time.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it is a well and long established company and it offers various progression and training developments during careers. It is supportive and informative.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Work hard to achieve what is on offer. It is a company you can grow in and develop lots of skills. Listen to the coaching and take in as much as possible from the experienced engineers because it is a complex network and it can be very rewarding.
