  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job is different everyday, the main thing involves overcoming different engineering challenges and problems. These can differ massively but all come from the press tooling that we have at mini plant Swindon. regular maintenance to the press tool is the most common work that is done, with breakdowns and smashups happening less regularly. Most focus on hand fitting skills.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have leant lots of different hand fitting skills including grinding, filing and stoning. As well as many different machining skills such as lathe work, milling and surface grinding. the main skill that has greatly increased is problem solving and working round problems within a team of experienced engineers. these skills are still developing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the apprenticeship program here at Mini/BMW. It is very varied work and a very good environment to work in. The college can be challenging at times however completing it give you a good sense achievement. The structure of the apprenticeship is well planned and this makes the apprenticeship more enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the the program is very good it is organised and the training is well planned and structured to ensure that you get all of the skills and knowledge that you require. The college side of things is well organised and ensures that you get all of the paperwork that you require.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • the support that we receive from our employer BMW is very good, they make sure that we are looked after, and that we have everything that we need. This is in terms of training support, college support, monetary support and the support for the equipment that we throughout the course of the apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support that we receive from all are training courses is very good this includes college support, NVQ support and EPA support. The support is given back regularly and in great detail to ensure that you can achieve everything that you need to throughout the course of the program to the level that you would like to achieve

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications that you achieve through out the course of the apprenticeship are directly linked to what you do within the workplace and they ensure that you have the right skills and knowledge that you need to perform to you best within the workplace. The qualifications ensure that you have the depth of knowledge that you need to progress within the business.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many different charity event that you can get involved in at work as well as community events. you also find that you are in a job with many people with that same interest and this mean that you end up with a network of people where by you can do different social, sports and other things.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend the apprenticeship to any person who enjoys engineering and enjoys problem solving. It is a great and detailed apprentice within a large business where you are able to meet many people and achieve lot and learn many skill and attain knowledge which you wouldn't get anywhere else.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • For a person who want to apply for the BWM apprenticeship first off I would just say go for it if you are thinking about it. As to tips make sure that you know your subject before you go to the interviews this means ensuring that you have as much prior experience of engineering, mechanics or like subject to ensure that you can easily speak about the base knowledge need for the apprenticeship.
