  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently training to become a fibre optic engineer, this involved service delivery and providing fibre to the customer premises. A standard working day will include underground, overhead and climbing as well as providing great customer service and ensuring that you are completing the jobs in a safe and productive way.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt various new skills including gaining knowledge on all the tools and equipment i will be using. I have been taught all about fibre installation and part of copper installation. How to provide great customer service and how to properly cable and connect fibre to the customers house.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy learning all about the job role, fibre cabling and copper cabling. I enjoy the different scenarios and meeting people from all walks of life. Its nice to be able to work outside as well as indoors and have the option to work independently or in a team.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I am still relatively new to the program however so far everything has been very organised. All of the trainers and staff within Openreach are extremely helpful, friendly and give great feedback so you are constantly improving. I am looking forward to completing my NVQ and see how this year goes.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a huge amount of support from my buddy, patch lead, management and the apprenticeship team. I am constantly getting emails asking how i am doing during my journey and i personally feel that i have a lot of support and i can speak to multiple people if i ever have an issue.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am getting a lot of help and support from my buddy, patch lead, management and the Bristol team in general. I feel that Openreach is very supportive and friendly and are providing everything that i need. I currently have no issues with the support that i am currently getting.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I haven't actually completed any apprenticeship days with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] yet, but he has emailed us with links to help us get prepared for the first day. I get the feeling that i will have plenty of support through this journey in order to help me succeed and pass this NVQ.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I haven't looked into this properly yet, but i have had emails keeping me informed on all activities that are currently going on. As i have previously said i am still relatively new to the job but i am sure within a few weeks or months this will become more apparent to me

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach have provided all of the relevant training, equipment, support and encouragement that i have needed to start my career. They have provided a safe and friendly working environment for me and everyone who i have met out on the field has been extremely friendly and helpful with any advice.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • To be confident and not stress about things too much, everyone has there own pace at learning things. Listen to all of the advice that the trainers and buddies give to you as it is very helpful and encouraging. To take each day as it comes and not to stress about the future too much :)
